In the twenty years I have been riding dirt bikes I had the most fun racing in Ostersund (Sweden). It was a new experience racing in the snow and with the spikes. Walking the test with Husaberg riders Daniel Persson and Ricard Wressel I was getting kind of nervous and even more so as the race was getting closer. While Daniel and I were sitting in the sauna we asked Giovanni Sala what the transfer sections were going to be like and he said they couldn’t get a good estimated time because when they were riding the course they would go 50 meters and get stuck, go another 50 meters and get stuck again The terrain was a lot like Minnesota in the northern part of the state; lakes every were and huge pine trees. The 1st day was really wet and the temperatures was around 35-40 degrees The snow in the woods was very difficult to ride and just when you were getting comfortable riding, wambooooo your front end jump out of the snow rut and you’re making a nice snow angle in the snow. The first day was around 120 miles or so. We rode the course 3 1/2 times The Enduro test was probably the toughest; you had to navigate well because if you made a mistake there were plenty of places to get your bike stuck in the mud and snow ruts. The first day I finished 14th out of 24. The second day was a lot of fun. I awoke to around a inch of snow on the ground and still snowing we started the race in the snow and it ended up snowing all day by the time we ended up finishing the race we had around 6-8 inches of fresh snow. Day 2 was much easier it was alott colder the the day before, around 25 degrees. The course was all frozen. Parts of the course you were able to get on top of the snow and stay out of the rut but that was a gamble I tried that once and I found a warm spot in the snow and I went over the bars faster than you can say” OBOY this is going to hurt”. Day 2 I ended up finishing 15th. I achieved the goal that I set before the race in Ostersund in not bing the last rider in my class. Overall I look forward to next year and maybe a little bit of luck we can start a winter race here in the USA maybe a Nat. Enduro.
